Maintenance Tips

RB Paving Company Limited is please to provide you with the following tips for use and care of your newly paved driveway:

  • Keeping the edges of your driveway built up with gravel or topsoil will help to avoid breakage of the asphalt.

  • The use of patio and lawn furniture or kickstands on bicycles or motorcycles on your driveway can leave indents where the furniture or kickstand has been.  This is most common on a newly paved driveway in the heat of summer.  Remember your driveway is black in color and can become very hot and pliable in the  heat of the sun.  Also, steering the wheels of a vehicle that is not moving can make marks in hot asphalt.

  • In the event of a gas or oil spill on your driveway, immediately cover the spill with baking soda to absorb the fluid.  Spills like this can soften new asphalt and cause it to deteriorate.

  • It is best to keep any kind of traffic (vehicles or foot traffic) off your newly paved driveway for at least two to three days to allow the asphalt to set up and harden.

  • Weeds and dandelions are incredibly strong.  If a weed begins to grow up through your driveway, hammer a large nail next to the weed.  Pull out the nail and pour weed killer down the hole.  After the weed dies, the asphalt that has lifted will settle down in place.

  • Asphalt Sealing - It is not necessary to have your driveway sealed; however, it can prove to be beneficial.  Many people will have an older driveway sealed to give it a newer look.  Furthermore, it is also common to seal a driveway as an added protection against oil and gas spills as well as general deterioration.  It is recommended that you wait sixty to ninety days before applying sealer to new asphalt.  There are two options available to you if you have decided to seal your driveway.  The first is to purchase cans of asphalt sealer at a local hardware store and roll the sealer on your driveway yourself.  The second is to have an asphalt-sealing company seal your driveway for you.  Asphalt sealing companies have special equipment that they use to spray the sealer on the asphalt in a more even manner than can be achieved by hand rolling.  It is cheaper to buy it by the can and roll it on, but as with most things in life, you only get what you pay for.  Usually, sealer that is sprayed on has a higher liquid asphalt base which provides a stronger protection.  Again, asphalt sealing is not a necessity but is certainly an option you may wish to consider.
